Sometimes, Real Care Takes a Little Dance

Sometimes, Real Care Takes a Little Dance — Take it From Gloria

Some caregivers do the job. Others live the job. Spend just a few minutes speaking with Gloria Lilus, a passionate Home Health Aide working with White Glove, and one thing becomes immediately clear: caregiving isn’t just something she does. It’s something she believes in with her whole heart. “I love my job,” she says simply. “I really do.” And when you hear her story, you understand exactly why.

Caregiving Was Always Part of Life

For Gloria, the path to caregiving didn’t begin in the United States. Long before joining White Glove, she was already helping others in her home country.

“Before I came to this country, I was already doing it back home. I love taking care of people and doing my best when they cannot do for themselves.”

That instinct—to help, to step in, to support someone who needs it—is what continues to drive her today. “My heart is in it,” she says. “If I’m ever in that position, I would want someone to do the same for me.”

Chat With Them, Watch With Them, Dance If Needed

Gloria’s clients are in their eighties and nineties. Many days are filled with simple routines: helping with daily needs, keeping them comfortable, and making sure everything runs smoothly.

But what matters most to Gloria is the human connection. “I talk with them. I encourage them,” she explains. “You can’t just go there, do what you have to do, and leave.” Instead, she creates moments of companionship. Sometimes that means putting on the television and chatting about what they see.

Sometimes it means laughing about something small. Sometimes it means encouraging a little movement and sometimes? A little dancing.

“Sometimes they’re having a day,” Gloria says with a laugh. “So I say, ‘No, no, no—let’s go, let’s go!’ I give them a little dance, shake them up a little, and we keep going.” That spark of energy can change the whole mood of the day.

Showing Up — No Matter What

We asked Gloria for challenges in caregiving, and Gloria paused for a moment. “My biggest challenge?” she repeats thoughtfully. Then her answer reveals the kind of caregiver she is.

“My biggest thing is being there for my client — no matter what.”

Weather, long days, or personal fatigue don’t easily keep her away. Gloria believes the person depending on her deserves reliability and consistency. And if she truly cannot come in, she makes sure the client is still protected.

“If I ever can’t make it,” she explains, “I call my supervisor and ask them to send someone who will really care for the patient — someone who is there fully for the patient.”

Her sense of responsibility runs deep. Even taking time off can weigh on her mind.

“I’m sometimes afraid to take a day off,” she admits, “because whatever I’m doing for that person, I want the next person to do the same — or even more.”

Gloria Filled In on a Desperate COVID Night — Five Years Later, She’s Still There

One story captures that commitment perfectly. During the height of COVID, Gloria accepted a temporary fill-in assignment where her help was strongly needed. It was supposed to be just coverage — a short stop to help during a difficult moment.

But when she walked into the home and saw the situation, she didn’t feel like walking away. The client clearly needed stronger support and stability. Gloria spoke up and stepped in to help. What began as a temporary assignment turned into something much bigger. Years later, she’s still there. “I came as a fill-in,” Gloria says simply. “But I’m still here with her since that time.”

For Gloria, caregiving was never about doing the minimum required.

Her rule is straightforward: “Show up for your client,” she says firmly. “Show up and do your best.”

The Moments That Make It Worth It

For all the hard work caregiving requires, Gloria says the most meaningful moment is simple. “The best part is coming around and seeing the smile,” she says.

Sometimes that smile appears after a conversation. Sometimes after a laugh. Sometimes after a difficult moment passes.

Even when a client is upset or frustrated, Gloria approaches it with patience.

“They might say things sometimes,” she explains. “But I brush it off. I say, ‘OK, no worries.’ It’s not really them, it’s just what they’re going through.”

A few minutes later, she says, everything can feel normal again.

“That’s how it is.”

Building Trust With Families

Caregiving doesn’t only involve the client—it also means building trust with families. Gloria takes that responsibility seriously.

Throughout the day, she keeps family members updated about what’s happening. If something changes, she lets them know. If a doctor visits, she shares the information.

“I always keep them informed,” she explains. “If something happened, they deserve to know.” That level of communication reassures families who can’t always be there themselves and it helps create strong relationships built on trust.

Joy in the Simple Things

Outside of work, Gloria finds happiness in the things she loves most.

Family is at the center of her life. Her relatives are spread across places like Georgia and Florida, and family reunions bring everyone together.

She also loves cooking—especially traditional Caribbean dishes like

curry, roti, pelau, and callaloo.

Even during the workday, Gloria sometimes brings her cooking into the mix. Her food prep goes beyond the basics, and her culinary skills add a touch of spice to her patients’ days as she makes exactly what they love. During the interview, she casually mentioned she was in the middle of preparing pumpkin and sweet potato for the client she was caring for.

Working with White Glove

Gloria has been working with White Glove since 2019, and she speaks fondly of her experience. Whenever one case ends, she says, the team works to find another placement that fits her schedule and the client’s needs perfectly.

“The love for my family and my clients keeps me going,” Gloria says. “I’m grateful to wake up every day and have the strength to go out and work. I feel blessed to have my clients and to have a job. It allows me to live life and enjoy my grandchildren and my family.”

Sharing Her Philosophy With All

After many years in caregiving, Gloria has a message she believes every new caregiver should hear. “If you don’t have heart and compassion,” she says, “this job is not for you.”

Caregiving isn’t just about hours on a schedule or tasks on a checklist.

It’s about seeing the person in front of you. “You don’t come here just for the money,” she explains. “You come with heart. With love.”

Her advice is to imagine yourself—or someone you love—in that same position. Then care for the client the way you would hope someone would care for your own family.

Gloria, your story truly inspires us. The joy and kindness you bring to your work is contagious! Your patients are lucky to have you, and White Glove is proud to have you on our team. Thank you for the care, dedication, and positivity you bring every day!
